You can modify the formatting options of an object from its Properties dialog bar.  The properties shown correspond to the item that is highlighted in the Navigation Bar.

Once you have selected the desired object, you can change its properties (including formatting properties like font and background) using the Font group in the Home tab.  In addition, you can select a fragment of text and apply formatting attributes using commands from the "Design" toolbar:
