Question:  I'm very interested in the supported version of XF Ultrascale for IBM AIX Systems.  However, how will the licensing work for using XF Ultrascale with AIX?

Answer:  

XF Rendering Server will require 1 license for each online logical processing unit.

To find out the number of onlinelogical processor units, run the following command:

mpstat

Search for the “Systemconfiguration: lcpu=” line. The lcpu value represents the number of logical processing units.

Hello Kuciar,

The new licensing model should have little to noimpact on customers using the software in a virtual environment. Currently 1 Ultrascale VMware license supports up to 4 logical processors. Thatwill stay the same going forward.  The enterprise Edition will support 1logical processor per license. Installation of the licenses will remain the same.  We hope this is helpful to you.

It's my understanding that per-CPU licensing is going away at the end of 2012, and only Virtual licensing will remain. How will this affect your advice about installing XF Rendering Server on a VM system?

Question:  I just bought a virtual license that I've installed on Hyper V (Virtual Server), I'm getting an error message that is telling me I do not have enough licenses installed though.  Why is this happening?

Answer:  When running inside a virtualmachine the software doesn’t have access to the actual hardware and it reliesonly on the info provided by the hypervisor.

The Ecrion license administrator will register the logical processors as physical.  Each Virtual License should accommodate up to 4 virtual CPU's.  

Specifically, XF Renderer will use the number of CPUs reported by the BIOS. Wheninstalled in a non-virtualized OS, this is the most reliable method ofdetermining the number of sockets.

In a virtualized OS, hypervisors may have different waysof emulating the BIOS and deciding what will be presented to the guest OS as aphysical CPU.

The problem doesn't stop there however. Some hypervisorscan dynamically change the number of virtual CPUs depending on the load of theVM.

Because operating in a VM environment presents uniquechallenges, we recommend using per instance licenses.

If you are having issues, remember to check the configuration of your Virtual Machine to ensure that the number of processors is configured correctly and communicate with your account manager to ensure your licenses are appropriate.

I'm trying to activate the license offline. It shows Activated in green colour. Once when i close and re-open the License Administrator, it shows 'Not Activated' in Red Colour.
 
    I'm vexed trying again and again. In 'My Account-> Licenses', the workstation Id got updated but unable use the s/w in my system.
 
   Help me in getting it resolved ASAP.

Q: We want to move a license from one computer to another
A: You have to

1) Uninstall the license on the old computer.
2) Install it on the new one.

In both cases, use the License Administrator.
If your computer doesn't have an internet connection, you will need to perform an offline installation/activation (click Installation Notes in your customer area for instructions).

You can limit the number of CPUs used by the server by changing the affinity mask for XFSvc.exe

Try searching Google for "set processor affinity".
