Increased performance, new product versions, enhanced features, and more!

XF Rendering Server 9.0.0 is almost here!  As we continually strive to provide our customers with the best solutions available, we have made several significant changes to the Ecrion XF Rendering Server family of products, due to be released December 23rd.  We are proud to unveil 4 distinctive products in the XF Rendering Server family: XF Rendering Server Express Edition, XF Rendering Server Professional Edition, XF Rendering Server Ultimate Edition and XF Rendering Server Omni Edition. Each product has been expertly designed to provide industry-leading performance in an easy to use manner.

These new products will replace the existing products in the XF Rendering Server family.  Previous XF products known as Enterprise and Ultrascale have been renamed to Express and Professional for consistent naming and to better describe their level of features in comparison with the other products in the family. In addition, in this release we are introducing two new high performance products: Ultimate and Omni.

  • Professional includes all features of Express and adds additional features and improved performance.
  • Ultimate includes all features of both Professional and Express and adds additional features and better performance.
  • Omni includes all features of Express, Professional, and Ultimate and adds additional features and superior performance. Omni is available only as part of EOS[1].

Existing Customers: Backwards Compatibility Information

The new release is backwards compatible with previous releases of XF Rendering Server version 7.0.0 and up, both in terms of features and licensing.

Functionality

Existing customers can install the new versions of the software as follows:

  • If previously using the Enterprise edition, use the new Express edition.
  • If previously using the Ultrascale edition, then use the new Professional edition.

Licensing

The new release will work with existing licenses without any changes:

  • Existing customers with “XF Rendering Server Enterprise Edition” licenses would be able to use the Express Edition
  • Existing customers with “XF Rendering Server Ultrascale Edition” licenses will be able to use the Professional Edition and the Advanced Outputs Add-On

The old “XF Rendering Server Enterprise Edition”, “XF Rendering Server Ultrascale Edition” and “XF Rendering Server Ultrascale Edition” for AIX will still be available for purchase until February 1st 2014. After that, customers will only be able to license the new products.

At any time, existing licenses can be migrated to their new corresponding licenses without charge. Migrating back to old licenses is not possible however.

The following table summarizes the ways in which this release will affect existing customers

Scenario

How are existing customers affected

All customers

With the new licensing scheme, development licenses will no longer interfere with the server products. In the past, if XF Designer was deployed on the same computer as an XF Server instance, the XF Server switched to a single-threaded, low-performance mode. This behavior was by design, allowing users to use XF Designer licenses for development but because deployment of XF Designer to production servers for troubleshooting is popular, the shortcomings of this approach outweigh the benefits.

Customers that generate AFP

With the new licensing scheme, customers will have the following options:

  • Use XF Rendering Server Professional and Install 2 licenses: “XF Rendering Server Professional” and “AOUT Add-On, or
  • Use XF Rendering Server Ultimate and install a “XF Rendering Server Ultimate” license, or
  • Use EOS

AFP output and other advanced output formats will be licensed separately from the core rendering engine; existing customers can contact their Ecrion Account Manager to lock in prices for a limited period.

Customers that run the engine in AIX environments

With the new licensing scheme, customers will have the following options:

  • Use XF Rendering Server Ultimate and install a “XF Rendering Server Ultimate” license

XF Rendering Ultimate provides topmost performance and includes more features that before were licensed separately; existing customers can contact their Ecrion Account Manager to lock in prices for a limited period.

EOS Customers

EOS customers will experience a performance improvement as they will be automatically upgraded to the Ultimate edition.

Enterprise Customers

Enterprise customers switching to the Express edition will have to make sure they don’t run on more than 4 logical processors. Running on more than 4 logical processors can be accomplished by upgrading to Professional.

[1] EOS (Ecrion Omni System) is Ecrion’s complete solution for automating document production from any data source. It includes all Ecrion technologies for data integration, document rendering, document workflow automation and optionally, business intelligence.

[2] DAL (Digital Assembly Line) is an add-on that enables the production of output from multiple inputs while applying consistent headers and footers, barcodes, etc. A print job created from multiple statements is an example.

[3] Transpromo (Transactional Promotions) is an add-on that enables the use of available whitespace in a page to insert marketing messages relevant to the content presented on that page. Since it is using whitespace it is easy to add to any template without changing existing layouts.

[4] NetLink – load balancing add-on enables multiple servers in a farm to share the load while providing failover capabilities.

[5] Advanced Outputs is an add-on that provides support for advanced output formats such as AFP (IBM MO:DCA print streams) and DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine).
