Q: Can the templates created with XF Designer be used with any XSL-FO compatible engine?
A: Yes. Obviously, the XSL-FO implementations are not 100% identical, just like HTML browser are not 100% identical, even though they are based on the same standard. Still, with minimum effort you can migrate your templates from an engine to another.
This is a huge benefit when compared with other reporting/publishing implementations because you are not getting locked in a proprietary solution.

Q: Can I get XF Designer to import existing XSL template files?
A: You can import XSL stylesheets in a larger XF Designer template (a XFD file) for the purpose of reusing fragments (such as xsl:template or xsl:variabile elements). The imported stylesheetscannotbe edited visually, but you can edit them in text mode. The reason is that the XSL language is designed to be concise has a structure that is not compatible with editing in WYSIWYG mode a document, especially when considering documents with complex pagination structures.

Q: What is the level of compliance with XSL-FO standard?
A: The designer is compatible with XSL-FO 1.1. The designer uses the same XSL-FO formatting engine as our server product (hence the WYSIWYG capabilities); for more details check out the XSL-FO Compliance Matrix for XF Rendering Server.
